National Collegiate Rugby’s high performance program opened its summer with a statement performance on the international stage, as the Griffins men’s and women’s 7s teams traveled to Portugal for the Algarve 7s tournament, held June 7–8. Both teams advanced to the finals of their respective divisions, showcasing the depth and talent of college rugby in the United States.

The men’s Griffins team stormed through the Men’s Open Cup, going undefeated in pool play and powering through the elimination rounds to claim the tournament title. The squad’s balanced, fast-paced attack and tough defense were hallmarks of their run. Leading the charge was Everett Boyd of Queen’s University, who was named Men’s Open Cup Player of the Tournament. Boyd had a standout weekend, scoring 37 points on 7 tries and 1 conversion—proving to be a consistent threat on both sides of the ball.

On the women’s side, the Griffins advanced to the final of the Women’s Open Cup after a series of dominant performances. Their quick ball movement, pressure defense, and teamwork led them to a well-earned runner-up finish against The Froggies Club of France. Mia Blocker led the team with an impressive 40 points, showcasing her scoring prowess and critical role in the team’s success.

"It was such a warm and fulfilling experience to coach the NCR Griffin ladies to a second place finish in Algarve. For many of these girls, this was their first time playing internationally on top of this being NCRs first international tournament appearance. The girls went out there and put on a top-level performance and represented American rugby so well. They have stamped themselves into the NCR history books and I look forward to what more they do! What an honor. " - Naya Tapper, Olympian, Bronze Medalist and Assistant Coach

The Algarve 7s experience extended beyond just two days of tournament play. From June 4–9, the Griffins athletes engaged in focused training, team building, and cultural exchange. For many players, it was their first opportunity to compete internationally—an important milestone in their rugby development.
