Seven teams earned automatic qualification to the 2025 Collegiate Rugby Championship over the weekend, and three more teams are slated to qualify this week.
The Frostbite 7s in Lancaster, PA produced the first Premier Cup qualifiers of the season, with American International College women and Brown men punching their tickets to Maryland. The Yellowjackets were perfect over the two-day tournament, beating Penn State, 43-0, in the final.
The Yellowjacket men nearly made it a Frostbite double for AIC, going undefeated through pool play Saturday and beating Babson in the semifinals. They got up early on Brown in the final, but the Bears came back late to win, 17-14.
Central Florida became the second team to automatically qualify in Women’s D1 Club, winning the Gate City 7s at Guilford College Saturday in Greensboro, NC. The Knights defeated North Carolina State and Howard in pool play and James Madison in the semifinals, before a rematch with the Wolfpack in the finals, winning, 17-10.
Coastal Carolina won the D2 bracket at Gate City 7s, but the Chanticleers had already earned a bid, winning Love at First Ruck in Tallahassee, FL two weeks ago. So runner-up Georgia Tech, who fell to Coastal, 14-5, in Saturday’s final, will take the bid to Maryland, marking the program’s first-ever trip to the CRC.
Virginia Tech became the first team to qualify in Men’s D1 Club over the weekend, winning the Terrapins 7s Saturday in College Park, MD. The Hokies went undefeated against N.C. State, Delaware and Northeastern in pool play, beating host Maryland in the final, 29-5.
Colorado Mesa dominated a tough field at St. Patrick’s 7s in Rolla, MO to become the first Men’s D2 team to qualify. The Mavericks went 6-0 on the weekend, with the closest game being a two-try affair in the final, 26-12, over Ole Miss.
The first team to qualify in Women’s D3 is Drury out of Springfield, MO. The Panthers went undefeated in the women’s competition in Rolla, beating host Missouri S&T and Southern Illinois in the group stage, McKendree in the semifinals and Colorado School of Mines in the title match.
Saturday’s Peach Cup at Silverbacks Park in Atlanta, GA will anoint new qualifiers in Men’s Premier Cup and D3, while the Hawkeye 7s, held indoor in Iowa City, IA, will see a Women’s D1 Club clinch a bid.
